- — Athens Gas Department Manager Steve Carter was recently named the Gas Person of the Year. The award is given by the Alabama Natural Gas Association to honor someone for exemplary service and for demonstrating leadership qualities. Carter started the Gas Person of the Year award in 1997, when he was president of ANGA. According to a nomination letter, Carter won this year because of his support of ANGA and for his creation and continued improvements to Leak City. Athens Gas operates Leak City on Sanderfer Road as a pipeline safety training facility that is used by pipeline operators and first responders from across the country. The nomination letter also noted Carter’s support of charity auctions and how he has donated personal items for auctions, such as an autographed Alabama football.
