Gandy leads East to finals

TANNER — It didn’t matter how many players West Limestone put on Jordon Gandy, the East Limestone junior was going to find a way to score. And find a way he did. Gandy scored a game-high 18 points to lead East Limestone to a 58-49 win over West Limestone in the semifinals of the Limestone County Tournament Friday.

The win set up a much-anticipated rematch with Class 1A No.1 Tanner Saturday.

Gandy started the game on fire, scoring 11 points in the game’s opening quarter, despite being blanketed by West defenders. Gandy playing through double teams is something he’s grown accustom to this year.

“I’m use to it,” Gandy said. “If they came with two guys, I was just going to pass it off to somebody.”

It wasn’t just points Gandy was contributing as he was just as eager to dish the ball off as he was to shoot Friday against West Limestone. Teammates Blake Tucker and Tristian Matthews each had 13 points for East.

“The last time we played them, Blake Tucker hadn’t played. Our gameplan was if the doubled down on Jordon, we were going to get Blake the ball,” said East Limestone head coach Chad Drake. “And it worked. We worked a couple of double-picks for Blake and he penetrated early and then got us the lead right before halftime.”

Tucker’s shot at the buzzer gave the Indians their largest lead of the game at 27-19 at halftime. But East wasn’t done there. The lead only grew in the second half and East led by as many as 16 points before West made a run to pull within single digits in the final minute of the game. Nathaniel Adams led West with 17 points while Austin Tuten scored 11 points for the Wildcats, all the fourth quarter.
