AUBURN —
Tanner made history Friday night by winning the school’s first state championship with a 28-14 victory over Washington County. The Rattlers used the same formula they had all season, playing sound defense and keeping the ball on the ground to grind out the win.
“It’s feels good to know that we did what we couldn’t do last year,” said running back Hayden Stephens. “It was so stressful all year in practice. Now, all the stress is gone.”
Stephens led Tanner with 29 carries for 142 yards. Fred Rich added 81 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Jonathan Fletcher rushed for a touchdown and returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
