EAST LIMESTONE – East Limestone picked up its first win of the season Friday, crushing Lawrence County 48-6 for a Class 5A Region 8 victory. After dropping their first three games of the season, the Indians proved their record was not a representation of their play.
“We played tough against Cullman but then looked bad at Russellville,” said East Limestone football coach Jeff Pugh. “I felt bad for our guys. They are good kids, really good kids. They really needed something positive to happen for them. Hopefully this win will help us pick up some momentum going into next week.”
The Indians wasted no time putting points on the board. Senior running back Torren Haley punched in the first touchdown of the game on fourth and goal. On the following possession, cornerback Trisitan Matthews intercepted Red Devils’ quarterback Clay Terry, setting up a 4-yard touchdown score by fullback T.J. Kelly. Just before the end of the first quarter, East Limestone signal caller Matthew Franks found wide-out Jevon Turner down the Indians’ sideline for a 42-yard touchdown pass.
Midway through the second quarter, Lawrence County answered back with a 2-yard touchdown run by James Vernon. With the clock running down, Franks connected with Matthews for 42 yards, giving the Indians a chance to score before the end of the half. On third-and-goal, Franks dropped back and hit Blake Tucker over the middle for a last second score. East Limestone led comfortably at the half, 28-6.
The second half was dominated by the Indians’ defense. Senior Matthew Franks, whom plays quarterback and safety, picked off Terry’s deep pass over the middle. East Limestone converted again on a Red Devil’s turnover, accumulating 60 yards rushing yards on 8 plays, capped off by Haley’s 2-yard touchdown run. After forcing a quick 3-and-out, senior Kennan Moses broke off the edge to block the Red Devils’ punt. East Limestone took advantage of the excellent field position, rewarding Kelly with another score.
Franks completed 5-of-10 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Haley rushed for 81 yards on 12 carries and two scores. Turner collected 64 yards on 14 carries and one catch for 42 yards. Senior place-kicker Mitchell Mathis converted all six of his extra point attempts. Terry was all the offense for the Red Devils, completing 3 passes for 59 yards and rushing for 81 yards on 13 attempts. East Limestone (1-3) will host 6A James Clemens for homecoming next Friday.
