Ardmore suffers first loss of season

— STEVENSON — North Jackson earned its first victory in Class 4A, Region 7 by defeating previously unbeaten Ardmore 42-14 on a pleasantly cool evening Friday at R.D. Hicks Stadium.

The Chiefs (1-2, 1-1) managed their first win of the season by outgaining the visiting Tigers (2-1, 1-1) 384 to 272 yards, including 308 on the ground. Ardmore’s previous two opponents this season had only rushed for 109 yards combined.

North Jackson scored six touchdowns in the first three quarters and led 42-0 before Ardmore found the end zone twice in the final period.

The Chiefs’ Gregory Chubb scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter and a 12-yarder in the second, while Daqwan Lawrence had a 66-yard punt return for a TD in the first and a 40-yard scamper in the third. North Jackson’s other score came on a 1-yard plunge by Dakota Gardiner midway through the second, and Caesar Diaz was 6 for 6 on extra points.

Ardmore fullback Ricky Lowery put the Tigers on the board 42-6 with 9:10 left in the fourth with a 1-yard TD run, but the PAT was blocked. The Tigers struck again with 4:20 remaining in the game when quarterback Garett Miller evaded the Chiefs’ pass rush by scrambling, reversing the field and scooting 46 yards for the score. Miller (3 of 11 passing for 35 yards and one interception) found Zach Ellis for the 2-point conversion to make the final 42-14.

North Jackson and Ardmore each had 11 first downs, but the Chiefs took advantage of their superior special teams play on punt returns, which gave them a short field for most of the game. Ellis punted six times for Ardmore for a 34.0 average, while North Jackson punted only three times.

Ellis, Hayden Durrett and Chris Welling each had a reception for the Tigers, while Miller led the team in rushing with 96 yards on 11 carries and one TD. Tyler McCarley added 55 yards on 14 carries, and Lowery had five rushes for 28 yards and a score.

Both teams continue Region 7 play Friday as Ardmore hosts Randolph and North Jackson travels to DAR.
