Through five weeks of the season, Muscle Shoals looked nearly unbeatable. The No. 1 ranked Trojans team was steamrolling opponents; beating various teams — good teams — by an average of five touchdowns.
Muscle Shoals opened the season with a 34-0 win over Rogers, followed by a 43-0 trouncing of rival Russellville.
Athens became the first team to score on the Trojans when Harper Ward kicked a fourth- quarter field goal in a 38-3 loss. That snapped a 15-quarter shut out streak, the longest in the state.
But last week, Muscle Shoals finally looked human in a 28-21 win over No. 4 Hartselle, scoring the winning touchdown with 27 seconds left in the game. While Muscle Shoals was putting the finishing touches on its sixth win of the season, East Limestone was pulling away from Athens to win its third-consecutive game.
The Indians have looked impressive during the streak, winning by an average score of 38-12. Beaming with confidence, East Limestone feels like it has a real chance of pulling off the upset against the No.1 team in the state tonight.
For that to happen, the Indians will most likely get the ball in the hands of Torren Haley early and often. The senior picked up one first down after another last week in the final scoring drive against Athens. Haley has gone over 100 yards three times this season and scored touchdowns in each of the team’s wins.
Look for East to keep the ball on the ground and the clock moving tonight in an effort to limit the amount of possession the Trojans will have. In a 30-21 loss to Cullman earlier this year, East Limestone threw just one pass the entire game.
Kickoff from East Limestone is at 7 p.m.
