The News Courier Player of the week is …
Demarcus Johnson, Clements: Demarcus Johnson started the season with a four-touchdown effort in a 54-53 four-overtime loss to West Limestone. The junior running back finished with an even more impressive effort guiding his team to its first win of the season.
Johnson had two interceptions for touchdowns, carried the ball 21 times for 111 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 53 yards. On defense, Johnson finished with eight tackles and a fumble recovery to go along with his two defensive scores.
Other notable standouts:
Aaron McWilliams, West Limestone: McWilliams had two receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats beat county rival Ardmore 28-13 in their final regular season game.
Torren Haley, East Limestone: The senior running back eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the season in his final game for the Indians. Haley carried the ball 29 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns in a loss at Auburn.
Johnnie Anderson, Athens: Anderson was a perfect 3 for 3 for 40 yards and three touchdowns in only his second game playing quarterback for Athens. The dual threat signal caller carried the ball 12 times for 58 yards in a 33-0 win at Sparkman.
Derek Teague, Athens: Teague put Athens on the board with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening kick Friday against Sparkman. It was not Teague’s first return touchdown this season, as the sophomore has been a threat for the Eagles throughout the season.
Rhett Bailey, Elkmont: Rhett caught a 63-yard touchdown from his brother, Jared, in the second quarter of Friday’s loss to Wilson. Bailey led the team in receiving with three receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Caleb McConnell, West Limestone: The senior quarterback finished his prep career a perfect 2 for 2 for 74 yards and two touchdowns.
Dillon Miller, West Limestone: Miller rushed eight times for 113 yards and a touchdown as West Limestone completed a sweep of its county rivals.
Tyler McCarley, Ardmore: McCarley finished his career at Ardmore with another 100-yard effort. The senior led the Tigers with 25 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-13 loss to West Limestone.
