Anderson leads Athens in homecoming win

— ATHENS — When Johnnie Anderson touches the football for Athens, good things happen. Anderson has been a catalyst for the Golden Eagles all season on both sides of the ball and it was no different Friday in a 17-0 homecoming win over Lawrence County.

Anderson scored two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to lead his team in the win. Normally lined up at wide receiver, Anderson played quarterback Friday in a “Wildcat” formation. The junior thrived in his new role, rushing for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

“Offensively, we played it close to the vest tonight with the wind blowing like it was,” said Athens head coach Allen Creasy. “We played really well defensively, and that allowed us to play ball control and stay vanilla on offense.”

Athens defense held Lawrence County to three first downs and 11 total yards through three-and-half quarters before the visitors added yardage after the game was well in hand.

After a scoreless first quarter, Athens put together a 15-play drive capped by Anderson’s 1-yard touchdown lunge on fourth-and-goal. After a quick three-and-out, Anderson broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run to give Athens a 14-0 halftime lead.

“He’s been the guy that has made plays for us all season,” said Creasy. “We wanted to find a way to get him the ball more, so we just snapped it to him tonight. We were able to get him the ball more and take some pressure off William (Mathews) at the same time.”

Mathews only had to throw five passes all night as Athens featured Anderson and its running game to control the clock and maintain a field position advantage. Harper Ward added a fourth quarter field goal give Athens a three-score lead.

Athens (2-7) will travel to Sparkman (1-8) for its final game of the season.
