Rogers escapes with 21-19 win over West Limestone

WEST LIMESTONE — SALEM — Rogers put a damper on West Limestone’s playoff hopes as the Pirates escaped James Kennemer Stadium with a 21-19 victory over the Wildcats in a Class 4A, Region 8 matchup Friday night.

West Limestone (3-4, 2-3 Region 8) landed the first punch with a opening drive touchdown run by Drake Lopez from the Rogers’ 18-yard line and a Matthew Sanders extra point to lead 7-0, but the Pirates evened the score at 7-7 when Austin Kerr found the end zone on a quarterback keeper.

Rogers (4-3, 3-2) took a 14-7 halftime lead, and neither team reached the end zone in the third quarter. West trimmed the lead to 14-13 in the final period when Alex Ritterbush hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Caleb McConnell, who was 14 of 22 for 178 yards with an interception and two TDs, but the 2-point conversion failed.

The Pirates took a 21-13 advantage, but with three minutes remaining in the game, the Wildcats marched 65 yards and Dillion Miller scored on a 3-yard run. Rogers stuffed West, which had 33 carries for 104 yards, on the potential game-tying 2-point conversion run up the middle to end the game at 21-19.

Next Friday in region action, West Limestone faces Priceville at home in a must-win game to stay in playoff contention, while Rogers hosts Haleyville.
