Streaking Golden Eagles win again

AHS claims area championship

— From staff reports

Athens has not lost an area game in more than two years and that trend continued Monday with another Class 5A area championship. The Golden Eagles pulled away from Russellville for a 59-43 win in the Area 16 Championship game.

Athens is now 16-0 over the past two seasons against area foes. Monday night’s win was the 15th straight for Athens, dating back to a December loss to Tanner in a Cullman Christmas Tournament.

Nathaniel “Giddy” Potts led the team once again with 13 points followed by Dedrick Stinnett with 10. Athens will host Russellville Friday in its sub-region game.

West Limestone 54

Wilson 43

Caleb McConnell’s double-double was enough to see West Limestone pull away from Wilson in the area championship game. McConnell scored 11 points and had 10 assists.

Nathaniel Adams dominated the paint for West, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Aaron McWilliams scored nine points and added seven rebounds.

West Limestone will host East Lawrence Friday for a chance to advance to the Northwest Regional at Wallace State community college.

Tanner 48

Hatton 35

Tanner clinched its 14th consecutive area championship Monday night with a 48-35 win over Hatton. Tanner led 25-16 at halftime and held on for the double-digit win.

Greg Maclin led Tanner with 19 points. Jace Haggermaker scored 12 and added nine rebounds.

Ty Terry scored 18 points for Hatton.

Tanner will host Red Bay at 7 p.m. Friday in a sub-region game.
