Fast takes: recapping Friday night's prep football action

ATHENS — Austin 34

Athens 0

Austin’s fast-paced offense was too much for Athens Friday night, racking up more than 400 yards on 76 plays. Black Bears’ wide receiver Malique Elliott caught nine balls for 87 yards and two touchdowns while B.J. Watkins ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s shutout win. It was Athens third consecutive loss to an opponent ranked in Class 5A or 6A.

Ardmore 16

Clements 7

Ardmore had another dominating game from its offensive line and running backs, rushing for more than 300 yards for the third time this season. Led by Zach Ellis and Tyler McCarley, Ardmore gained 342 yards on the ground to spoil homecoming at Clements. Marcus McNaughton threw another touchdown pass, his seventh of the season, as the Colts led 7-0 until under a minute to play in the third quarter.

West Limestone 41

Elkmont 14

West Limestone ran away from the Red Devils in the second half to win at Boss Hill Stadium for the first time in 13 years. Following a 14-14 halftime deadlock, the Wildcats scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to secure the win. For the second consecutive week, West Limestone had two players — Logan Pugh and Dillon Miller — rush for more than 100 yards.

East Limestone 41

James Clemens 14

Seventeen players carried the ball for East Limestone Friday in a homecoming victory over James Clemens. The group effort racked up 278 rushing yards. East Limestone quarterbacks Mathew Franks and Brick Pugh each threw touchdown passes as the Indians cruised to their second consecutive victory.

Tanner 48

R.A. Hubbard 0

Tanner continued to show why it deserve that No. 1 ranking after dismantling R.A. Hubbard on its home field. The Rattlers led 34-0 at halftime and emptied the bench in the second half on their way to a comfortable non-region win. Although the Tanner offense has averaged more than 42 points per game, the defense has been an equal factor in the team’s 5-0 start. Tanner held R.A. Hubbard to negative 19 yards passing in the shutout.
