WEST LIMESTONE —
WEST LIMESTONE — It didn’t matter who carried the ball for West Limestone Friday night in a 36-27 win over East Lawrence, they were going to get yards. The Wildcats rushed for 296 yards behind a punishing offensive line that paved the way for two players — Tucker McCormic and Dillon Miller — to run for more than 100 yards.
McCormic scored on touchdown runs of nine and 17 yards in the second half to help West pull away for the win.
“Coach (Jordan) Cantrell really challenged the offensive line this week in practice,” said West Limestone coach David Arnsparger. “They really answered the challenge tonight with a great game.”
Trailing at halftime, West shutdown the East Lawrence ground game in the second half to pull away for the win. West Limestone held the Eagles to three first downs in the second half and forced consecutive three-and-outs in the third and fourth quarters that proved to be the difference in the game.
In a game that featured four lead changes, the teams swapped punched for three quarters before West got the two crucial stops to tip the balance in its favor.
“Defensively, I think our guys got comfortable with what the plays they were running,” Arsnpargers said. “That quarterback is dynamite. Our kids did a great job of containing him.”
The Wildcats held East Lawrence quarterback Terrance Deloney to 4-of-17 passing for 60 yards and one touchdown. Deloney rushed for a team-high 145 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries.
The dual-threat quarterback gave the visitors the lead on their opening drive on a 15-yard touchdown. They added a two-point conversion on a trick play to take an early 8-0 lead. On his first carry of the game, Miller took an end-around 50 yards for the first West Limestone score. Rudy Johnson evened the score on a two-point conversion run.
The Wildcats took a 14-8 lead on a Caleb McConnell 2-yard quarterback sneak. McConnell connected with Aaron McWilliams on a 50-yard pass earlier in the drive on third-and-8 that set up the go-ahead touchdown.
The Eagles answered with an 18-play, 66 yard drive, capped by a Deloney 2-yard run to take a 15-14 lead into halftime. It was more Deloney to start the second-half as East took a 21-14 lead when he punched it in from three yards out.
It was all West Limestone from that point on as the Wildcats scored on their next three possessions to take a 36-21 lead that proved too much for the visitors to overcome.
In addition to the McCormic touchdowns, McConnell added another quarterback sneak touchdown and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. McConnell finished completing 4-of-8 pass attempts for 87 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns.
McCormick led West with 17 carries for 161 and two touchdowns while Miller added 107 yards and touchdown on 10 carries.
West Limestone (2-2, 1-2) will travel to Elkmont (1-3, 1-2) next week while East Lawrence (0-4, 0-3) will visit West Morgan (1-3, 1-2).
