ABS among local volleyball teams in Super Regional

The No. 8-ranked Athens Bible volleyball team booked its place at the North Regional Tournament with a win Saturday over Whitesburg Christian Academy in its area tournament. ABS was one of three teams to qualify for the newly formed “Super Regional.”

In all, 16 teams in six different classifications, qualified for the North Regional that will begin Friday, Oct. 26, at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

ABS beat Decatur Heritage in its opening game before defeating the hosts 24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 to claim the Class A Area 14 title. Samantha Cundiff recorded 64 assists, nine aces and seven kills over the two games. Other contributing to the victory were Anna Price with 21 kills, Anna Stinnet with 13 digs and Sara Lail with 10 kills and four aces.

Other teams from Limestone County to qualify for the tournament were Ardmore and East Limestone. Ardmore finished runner-up in Class 4A Area 14 while East Limestone was the runner-up in 5A Area 15. Ardmore will play Cleburne County at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The winner will play the Madison Co./Fairview winner Saturday at noon.

East Limestone plays Pinson Valley at 10:15 a.m. The winner will play the winner of Lawrence County/Walker at 10: 30 a.m. Saturday.

The AHSAA Super Regionals are single elimination tournaments in which the top four teams from the north and south tournaments advance to an eight-team state tournament in Montgomery beginning Wednesday, Oct. 31. In order to qualify for the state tournament, teams must win their first two games at the region tournament.
