Tanner cruises in blowout victory

— CHEROKEE — No. 2 Tanner improved to 3-0 with a 67-7 Class 2A, Region 8 victory over Cherokee on the road at W.L. Harris Stadium.

On a cool night the red-hot Rattlers scored five touchdowns in the first quarter and three in the second to lead 52-0 at halftime with most of the Tanner starters sitting out the second half.

Tanner (3-0, 2-0) held Cherokee (1-2, 0-2) to 148 yards of total offense and only six first downs. The Rattlers’ defense, which has already recorded one shutout this season and allowed only two touchdowns in three games, forced the Indians to lose five fumbles.

Greg Maclin returned a fumble 30 yards for the first Tanner touchdown 13 seconds into the game and also caught a 15-yard TD pass in the first.

Hayden Stephens scored on a 48-yard run in the first, while Fred Rich scored on 65-yard run in the first and a 15-yarder in the second.

During the second quarter, freshman Tiquaveious Mayberry recovered a Cherokee fumble during a kickoff return in the second quarter and returned it 21 yards for the score, Kyle Shoulders rumbled for a 23-yard TD and Rich had a 29-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

In the third Fletcher threw a 61-yard bomb to Blake Whitt for the only score of the quarter, and Sydney Townsend added a 13-yard TD run with 3:17 left in the fourth as the Rattlers added the 2-point conversion.

Cherokee’s only score came in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run by freshman Dakota Blystone.

Stephens had seven carries for 101 yards and one touchdown, while Rich ran three times for 91 yards and two scores. Quarterback Jonathan Fletcher finished 3 of 4 passing for 97 yards and one TD, while Markell Mull was 2 for 2 for 39 yards.

Tanner finished with 296 yards rushing on 28 carries and 136 yards passing, and Allen Rios was 5 of 9 on extra point attempts.

Both teams continue Region 8 play Friday as Tanner hosts Lexington and Cherokee plays at Hatton. —Brandon Crumbley
