Losing to West Limestone 54-53 in four overtimes last week was hard enough for Clements football team. Colts head coach Michael Brown wants to make sure that game doesn’t beat his team twice when they hosts West Morgan tonight.
“What we can control is us,” Brown said. “Our kids need a win. The community needs a win. We had some pretty confident practices the last couple of days. I hope Friday is an improvement from last week. That game last week will mean so much more if we win this week.”
Clements players aren’t focusing on that record-setting loss. Instead, they have turned their attention to a Rebels team that was won 11-straight games in the series. But this is a different West Morgan team with a new coach and young group of players.
Both teams are coming off season-opening losses, but Brown said his team still has plenty of confidence following last week’s offensive duel with rival West Limestone.
“I was proud of our offense. In the spring, we put in several pass concepts and really worked on our passing game,” Brown said. “We aren’t going to ground and pound like we have before because of our numbers. That was our plan in the spring. Whether it was going to be fruitful or not, we didn’t know. And we found out Friday that it worked.”
It worked all right.
The Colts put up more than 400 yards and scored eight touchdowns in a game that last more than four hours. Senior quarterback Marcus McNaughton threw for a school record 324 yards and five touchdowns and no interceptions.
“A few of the plays we ran were some scramble drills,” Brown said. “On some of those route changes, Marcus made some good throws. Our line protected well for the most part. It was impressive for sure.”
The player on the other end of those record-setting passes was speedster Demarcus Johnson, who had pretty good night of his own, with 268 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. And forget about wide receiver Jimmy Marsh, who caught two more touchdowns and wowed the crowd with a 42-yard over-the-head catch in the third quarter.
Despite the big numbers from the Colts’ skill players, Brown said Clements other 19 players are just as important going forward.
“We talked about this since the summer that we’ve got quality of quantity,” Clements coach Michael Brown said. “This group is what you call a team. That game the other night showed it, playing until 11:15 at night on both sides of the ball.
“Defenses by that time are tired and it’s pretty much on the offenses to win the game. I was proud of them. They were tore up a little bit, but a game like that can change the community.”
Clements and West Morgan kickoff at 7 p.m. tonight from M.T. Newman Stadium in Clements.
