EAST LIMESTONE —
EAST LIMESTONE — In front of a packed house at Cavnar Field, the Indians were their own worst enemy Friday night, dropping their season opener 20-2 to Madison County.
“We’d bust a play but then turn around and get a penalty or fumble the ball,” explained East Limestone head football coach Jeff Pugh. “We’ve got to find out how good we’re going to be when things get tough.”
The Indians got off to a fast start when Matthew Franks intercepted Madison County quarterback Jackson Richard on the third play of the game. East Limestone then put together a 15-play drive but turned the ball over after failing to convert a fourth and 5.
Taking over at his own 27, Tigers’ quarterback Richard found wide receiver Brandon Gurley on a quick slant route for 72 yards to the Indians 1-yard line. Two plays later, senior star running back Jordan Chunn punched in the first score of the game.
Richard connected again with Gurley for a 16-yard touchdown before the Indians forced a safety just before the half ended to enter the locker room down 14-2.
East Limestone’s struggles continued at the start of the second half as they turned the ball over on their first two possessions.
“We made too many mistakes,” said Pugh. “You can’t make that many mistakes and expect to be a good football team.”
Late in the fourth quarter, Madison County took advantage of another East Limestone turnover when Richard found wideout Monterio Burchfield on a post route for a game-sealing touchdown.
Richard completed 9-of-15 passes for 165 yards and two scores. Gurley had four catches for 110 yards and a score. Burchfield caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. “We only won four games last year,” said Madison County’s Jordan Chunn who rushed for 62 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. “With a bunch of seniors on this team, we came in to prove a point.”
East Limestone quarterback Matthew Franks completed 2-of-7 passes for 18 yards. Trishian Matthews led all rushers with 63 yards on 12 carries and caught two passes for 18 yards. Torren Haley carried for 39 yards on seven tries.
East Limestone (0-1) will host Cullman for a class 5A Region 8 game next week.
