Why it’s important: Athens may be out of the playoff race, but can play spoiler Friday against the No. 10 team in Class 5A. Cullman is guaranteed a playoff spot, but still has a chance to host a first-round playoff game with a Hartselle loss.
Preview: These teams enter this contest headed in opposite directions. While Cullman looks to fight for playoff positioning, Athens will try to salvage its season with an upset win. The Golden Eagles have been competitive in every game outside of 5A No. 1 Muscle Shoals and 6A No. 4 Austin, both undefeated. Athens will try to contain a Cullman offense averaging 38 points per game. Cullman’s only loss this season was a 21-14 defeat at Hartselle.
