Last year, Athens Bible’s volleyball season ended much sooner than it hoped. This season, the team is coming back more experienced and more motivated to get to Pelham.
So far, ABS has a 20-8 record through the end of the regular season, and is ranked No. 8 in Class 1A, according to the latest state volleyball poll. With the area tournament beginning next week, the Lady Trojans have picked up momentum at the right time.
Last Saturday, the team hosted the Eli Invitational, defeating Shoals Christian, Saint Bernard, and Elkmont to win first place in the hometown tournament.
The win wasn’t all the Lady Trojans had to celebrate. Sophomore setter Samantha Cundiff broke the AHSAA record for aces in a single match. With 15 aces and 20 consecutive serves, Cundiff led the Trojans to a 25-5 victory in the championship match against Elkmont.
Despite her accomplishment, Cundiff continues to remain humble.
“I couldn’t have done it on my own,” she said. “The team really helped me keep it going. When I first found out, I didn’t really know what to do. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.”
Her coach praised the sophomore not only for her play on the court but also for her attitude off the court.
“I was tickled for Sam,” head coach April Davis said. “It was a big deal. Sam’s a great player, but more than just a player on the court. She’s probably one of the most unselfish people I’ve ever coached. There are a lot of times she could take some of the glory and score herself, but she doesn’t. She gives it to other people. She works hard and she’s a good example for the rest of the girls here.”
While the Lady Trojans have much to celebrate at this time, they won’t allow any of the success to distract them from the upcoming post-season. Davis and her team know that after the final regular-season game it’s time to get down to business.
“After Thursday, it doesn’t matter who we’ve beat, our record goes back to 0-0,” she said. “It matters what we do from here on out.”
ABS will travel to Whitesburg Christian for its area tournament next week.
