It has been more than four decades since Tanner’s football team was ranked No. 1. On Wednesday, the Rattlers returned to the top of Alabama’s prep rankings as the top ranked team in Class 2A.
Tanner began the season No. 3 in the poll, behind defending state champions Elba and a loaded Fultondale team. Three weeks into the season and both those teams have lost, leaving Tanner to ascend to the top in 2A.
Wednesday’s No. 1 ranking was the first for Tanner since 1970. A surprising fact considering all the success the Rattlers have experienced over the last decade. Tanner is currently tied for first in two separate categories in Alabama high school football — regular season wins (29) and home winning streak (21).
After reaching the school’s first-ever state championship game last season, this Tanner team looks even better through the first few weeks of the season. Tanner has outscored opponents 114-14 and is allowing 110 yards per game on defense.
What makes this Tanner team even scarier going forward is the fact that the Rattlers have already made it through the meat of their schedule. Tanner beat Class 3A No. 4 Madison Academy in the opening game of the season, followed by a 34-0 shut out of last year’s Region 8 champion, Red Bay.
The only other teams with a winning record that stand in their way is a trip to R.A. Hubbard next week followed by a road game at Sheffield on Oct. 12.
With two different teams ranked No. 1 in 2A through the first two weeks, Tanner looks like its here to stay for a while.
