Madison — With the sun setting over Madison City Stadium and a slight chill in the air, An army of school spirited fans made it out to Madison City Stadium to see Athens in action again. Unfortunately for these Athens fans, the Golden Eagles came up short in a 28-7 loss to Bob Jones.
Following a scoreless first quarter Bob Jones’ Darius Brewton sacked Athens quarterback William Matthews, forcing a loose ball. The Patriots would come away from the dog pile with the football and score on the following play with a 6-yard run by Kevin Wright midway though the second quarter.
A few plays later, Patriots quarterback Trey Bates would found wide receiver Ben Washington in the end zone for another Bob Jones score.. The Golden Eagles tried to salvage a late field goal just before the half ended, but instead left for the locker room down 14-0.
After exchanging punts to begin the second half, Bolton Patton seized momentum for Athens when he intercepted Trey Bates pass inside the Patriots’ 20-yard line. Derek Teague put Athens on the board four plays later when he scored on a 5-yard touchdown run.
Bob Jones would strike back on the following possession with an 8-play, 82-yard drive, ending with another spectacular touchdown catch by Ben Washington. After a quick three-and-out from Athens, Patriots’ running back Kevin Carter broke a 30-yard run down the sideline for the game-sealing touchdown.
Bates finished the night completing 13 passes for 110 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Bob Jones running back Jaylon Rodgers ran for 66 yards on six carries. Washington finished the night with 5 catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
Athens quarterback Adam Harvey completed 10 passes for 72 yards. Teague led all rushers with 77 yards on 14 carries. Harper Ward helped out his quarterback, collecting two catches for 41 yards. Athens will visit Decatur Thursday, Aug. 30 for its season opener.
