Ardmore beats Butler to remain undefeated

— ARDMORE — The senior tandem of Tyler McCarley and Zach Ellis was unstoppable as the dynamic duo combined for 301 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-21 win over Butler in Class 4A, Region 7 play Friday night at Cooper Field in their first-ever meeting.

McCarley, who had 20 carries for 150 yards and two TDs, scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter and an 8-yard dash in the second, while Ellis (13 carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns) found the end zone from 32 and 11 yards out in the third quarter and a 13-yard scamper in the fourth.

Ardmore’s Christopher Green was 1 for 2 on extra-point kicks, while the Tigers converted all four of their two-point attempts on runs by Garett Miller, McCarley and Ellis and a pass from Miller to Hayden Durrett, who also intercepted two Butler passes and returned one for 66 yards to give the Tigers a 16-0 lead in the first quarter.

Butler scored on a 44-yard fumble recovery by Terrell Williams and converted the two-point try on a Travon Gardner run in the first quarter and a 14-yard TD pass from Williams to Garnell Caudle to trail 24-14 at halftime. After being held scoreless in the third and trailing 39-14, the Rebels added their final points with a 13 yard run by Marcus Hamlet and a PAT by Williams, who went 10 of 26 passing for 125 yards, three interceptions and a TD.

Ardmore held a team to under 200 yards of offense for the second consecutive week as the Tigers outgained Butler 352-181, including a 340-56 advantage rushing. Ardmore also held Elkmont to 92 yards of total offense in a 22-16 season-opening win Aug. 31.

Butler, 1-19 in its last 20 games, lost a fumble and had three interceptions, but only trailed by 10 points at halftime because Ardmore had three fumbles in the first half.

Both teams continue region play as Ardmore (2-0, 1-0 Class 4A, Region 7) plays at North Jackson and Butler (0-2, 0-1) hosts DAR.
