Tanner "D" overpowers Red Bay

— Tanner running backs Frederick Rich and Hayden Stephens rushed for a combined 232 yards, carrying their team to a 34-0 win over Red Bay. The Rattlers’ defense was even more impressive, giving up just 48 total yards. The only negative of Friday night’s contest was the numerous times yellow flags were laying on Rip Swanner Field.

“We made too many penalties,” explained Tanner head coach Laron White, whose team was charged with 11 penalties for 75 yards. “We’ve got to clean that up.”

The Rattlers’ got on the board early with an 11-play drive, capped by Rich with a 1-yard touchdown. On the next possession, Rich broke through the gap and outran the Tiger secondary for a 58-yard score. Later in the second quarter, senior wideout Greg Maclin returned a punt 47 yards inside the Tigers’ red zone. Stephens’ 15-yard touchdown run and a successful extra point by Allen Rios made it 21-0 at the half.

Tanner’s dominance carried over into the second half. Early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Justin Smith connected with Maclin down the Tanner sideline for another score. A few possessions later, Stephens reached paydirt for the second time.

A physical defense was the main contributor of Tanner’s dominance. The front seven collected four sacks and 11 tackles for loss while the secondary held Red Bay to zero completions and one interception. The defense also forced five of Red Bay’s nine possessions to three-and-out.

UAB commitments Rich and Maclin led the way for the Rattlers. Rich rushed for 151 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. Maclin caught four passes for 75 yards and one score. Stephens added 81 yards on 17 touches and two touchdowns.

Red Bay senior fullback Matthew Belue led the Tigers in rushing with 24 yards on 13 tries.

Tanner (2-0) will travel to Cherokee next Friday.
