Athens gets region, road victory

— Athens scored its first victory of the year in a 41-9 win at West Point Friday.

The Warriors allowed Athens only one offensive possession in the second and third quarters, forcing three-and-outs each time. However, missed opportunities ultimately cost West Point the game and a region win.

Athens struck first, capping off a six-play drive with a 1-yard run by Jonathan Pruitt in just under two minutes of play. Harper Ward added the point-after, giving the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead.

West Point’s first drive ended by turning the ball over on downs, but not before catching the Eagles off-guard attempting a fake punt. The pass slipped right out of the receiver’s hands for what would have been an easy first down.

The Eagles quickly turned the short field into another scoring drive. A 45-yard reception by Derek Teague set up a 7-yard run by Tarik Malone. Ward added the point-after and Athens led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

West Point missed their first shot to get on the board early in the second quarter, driving the ball down to the 3-yard line. The Warriors fumbled and Valdarian Collier scooped it up and scampered 78 yards for the touchdown. The extra-point attempt failed, but the Eagles had extended their lead to 20-0.

West Point’s final drive of the half gave the Warriors some momentum heading into the locker room. With just over a minute remaining, quarterback Bryant Farley went 5-for-5, connecting with four different receivers for 52 yards to set up a 26-yard field goal by Tyler Smith as the final seconds rolled off the clock.

West Point’s woes continued on  their second possession of the third quarter. Despite extending the drive on a fourth-and-5, the Warriors managed to get the ball down to the 8-yard line when another fumble was picked up by Athens’ Jarrett Mclin, who ran 88 yards for another Eagles touchdown and a 27-3 lead.

West Point’s only touchdown on the night came early in the fourth quarter when Tristan Dubberly found the end zone on a 7-yard run. The two-point conversion failed.

Athens scored two other times in the fourth quarter. Teague had a 66-yard pass for a touchdown and Fulton Robinson had an 11-yard run. Both of Ward’s kicks were good, ending the game with a final of 41-9.

Warriors’ coach A.J. Lamar said “he was proud of the effort his team gave,” but added, “you just cannot make mistakes like we made and expect to win games against teams like Athens.”

West Point continues region play next week when they face off with Cullman on the road.
