Central offense too much for West

— CENTRAL HEIGHTS — In their previous two meetings, Class 4A, Region 8 rivals West Limestone and Central-Florence kept fans in their seats until the final whistle blew with 1-point contests, including a triple-overtime thriller.

This time Central (3-0, 2-0) ensured a winning outcome by halftime with a 61-12 home victory at Wildcats Stadium. Central also won 27-26 last season and 42-41 in 2010.

West Limestone (1-2, 0-2) scored in the first quarter when quarterback Caleb McConnell threw a 36-yard touchdown strike to fellow senior Aaron McWilliams, and the Wildcats added another TD in the third when leading rusher Logan Pugh found the end zone from the Central 28-yard line. West Limestone was 0 for 2 on PATs and finished with 161 yards of total offense, including four first downs.

McConnell finished 2 of 11 passing for 48 yards with one TD, while McWilliams snagged two passes for 48 yards. Pugh finished with 10 carries for 57 yards and one score.

Junior Tyler McCormick led West Limestone in tackles with 11, while junior Matthew Reyer had seven stops.

Central, which led 35-6 at halftime, improved to 7-5 all-time against West Limestone, including the last seven meetings.

Both teams continue Region 8 play Friday as West Limestone hosts East Lawrence and Central travels to Haleyville.
