2 men accused of breaking into wrong hotel room armed with shotgun, brass knuckles

ELKMONT — Two men who broke into the wrong hotel room armed with a shotgun and brass knuckles and assaulted a man remained in jail Thursday with multiple charges, an official said.

Nickolas David McNutt, 18, of 888 Rolan Gooch Road in Toney and Cory Michael Webb, 32, of 100 Andy’s Drive in Hazel Green were arrested Wednesday on a charge of first degree burglary, then received more charges Thursday, said Limestone County Sheriff’s Investigator Stanley McNatt.

On Thursday, McNutt was also charged with menacing, second-degree criminal mischief and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, records show.

Webb was additionally charged with second-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, records show.

The two men are accused of breaking down a door at Budget Inn on Boyds Chapel Road in Elkmont on Saturday, Jan. 30, McNatt said.

“They kicked in the door to a room thinking a person who they suspected of robbing McNutt on Friday night in Madison County was in there,” he said. “That person was not there. A totally different person was there.”

McNutt allegedly entered the room armed with a shotgun, McNatt said.

A person in the room recognized the two assailants, he said.

“Webb struck a male in the body with a pair of brass knuckles and, as they were leaving, the two busted windows out of two vehicles and slashed the tires on one of the vehicles,” McNatt said.

Limestone Sheriff’s Lt. Brad Curnutt determined the identities of the suspected assailants from talking to the victims and other witnesses, and arrested them.

Webb and McNutt remained in the Limestone County Jail Thursday night in lieu of posting bonds totaling $17,500 and $13,500, respectively.
