Field day highlights end of school year
Shoes, cold (at one time) drinks and popcorn mark the path to a popular bounce inflatable Tuesday morning at Athens Elementary School. Third-grader Carilia Hood, seated at far right, ties her shoes to depart for another activity that included relay races, tugs-of-war competition, hoop tosses and more at the annual end of school year field day.

Athens Senior, Owens, signs with Faulkner
Athens senior Juli Owens signed a soccer scholarship with Faulkner University at a ceremony Tuesday morning at Athens High School. Owens was a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles. As a midfielder, Owens finished her senior year with two goals and four assist through the regular season. The senior finished her Athens career by winning the 5A state championship. Seated alongside Owens are her father, Ron Owens and mother, Debbie Owens.

Gulf anglers get longer red snapper season
Gulf of Mexico anglers will have a longer red snapper season than they thought. A week before opening, regulators announced that the recreational season in federal waters for the popular game fish will be 17 to 34 days instead of nine to 28.
